In the summer of 2016, Cavaiao emerged victorious alongside Portugal, securing the European Championship title. Subsequently, he parted ways with Monaco, remaining unemployed for half a year. In early 2017, he signed with Shanghai SIPG, contributing to the team in just six matches over a one-year tenure. At the start of 2018, Cavaiao bid farewell to Shanghai SIPG and officially retired from professional football.
